What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that affects the median nerve, which runs from the upper arm, near the shoulder, down into the hand, controlling movement and sensation in the thumb and all of the fingers except the pinkie. This nerve passes through the carpal tunnel, a passage in the wrist consisting of bones and ligaments. When the carpal tunnel becomes swollen and inflamed, it can put pressure on the median nerve.

What are the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

This can cause a variety of symptoms such as numbness and tingling, like your fingers have “fallen asleep”. Pain, itching, and burning sensations are also common, and may extend up the arm. This can be brought on by trauma or injury, or even from disorders like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, an overactive pituitary gland, or hypothyroidism. Many people also develop carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive motion injuries relating to their occupation.
