Back Pain and chiropractic care
Explained

What is back pain?

There are many factors that lead to back pain which would benefit from chiropractic care, and many are things we unconsciously do everyday: improper sitting or lifting, overexertion, trauma, inherited spinal abnormalities, or even stress may contribute to the reason for your pain or suffering. Many of the pain-sensing nerves of the spine are in the facet joints, the two interlocking “fingers” at the back of each spinal bone. The smooth surfaces on which these joints glide, can become rough, irritated, or inflamed. Surgical treatment often involves removing these facet joints, exposing the spinal cord.

Another cause of lower back pain can be a bulging or herniated disc putting pressure on the spinal cord or nearby nerve root. The result is often numbness, tingling, or pain down the leg. Cutting away the herniated disc tissue can permanently alter its ability to separate and cushion the adjacent bones. However, this rarely addresses the underlying structural causes of the problem.

OUR APPROACH

Common Treatments

After your first evaluation, you’ll be asked about your symptoms and your provider may order diagnostic tests, such as x-rays, to help them gain a better understanding of your problem.

When you have a diagnosis, you and your chiropractor will put together a treatment plan that takes place over a series of sessions. Each time you visit your doctor, they’ll apply forceful pressure onto key parts of your back. This is to realign your spine, relieve pressure, and alleviate pain. Pressure will sometimes be slow and gradual, while at other times it may be sudden and impactful.

Your chiropractor will most often deliver treatment with their hands, but they may also use specially designed instruments.

In addition to spinal manipulation, adjustments, and massages, your chiropractic treatment may also include: Vitamin and mineral supplements Healthy diet introduction Exercise regime Heat and ice packs Electrical stimulation How long it takes for a chiropractor to fix your back depends on you as an individual and the severity of your condition.

Some people get permanent relief after a handful of sessions, while other people will require regular appointments for years.
